Freach creek mountain bike race report 5/12/12

i carpooled to this race with Jeff Dickey... weather was a little hot (high 70's)... the course was rocky in spots with some faster section... the perfect recipe for flat tires... i had just set my bike up with Continental 2.2 X kings the the day before with the ProTection sidewalls... they are durable tires so i felt confidante using them on this course.

about 35 riders in the pro open field... again a good showing from my the Scott team ... Aaron, Cam, Dylan, Jeff, Ross, John and Jay were there... 7 of us were racing the Elite men category.

i started off about 15th or so going into the single track....  and gradually passed people till i was in 3rd place half way through the last lap (of 3)... i finished 3rd Aaron won and Cam came in 2nd! .. Scott swept the podium!... Dylan came in 7th and Jeff came in 8th Ross came in 19th Jay came in 20th and Jay finished first in the masters race.

next weekend no races, i will be doing road side cleaning for FBC (Frederick bicycle coalition) and probably a few long rides.

Iron Hill, mass series, 2012 mountain bike race report

5/6/12

i carpooled to this race with teammate Dylan Johnson... are team had a good showing, Nick Sears, Arron Snyder, Cam and Jay Dodge were also there.

there was a big turn out to this race.. i believe there was about 40 riders in the elite open category... the weather was cloudy and about 65 degrees... the course was a bit slick from the rain the day before.... the entire course was pretty uniformly slick so you could kind of adjust to having less traction.

at the start of the elite open category Nick powered to the front and lead for the fist mile or so... close behind him were Chris Beck, Dylan, Aaron and Cam... about 3 miles in Dylan had his chain break... that was the end of the race for him ( he had a mechanical last weekended too, hopefully it will all be sorted out for next weekend)... i had a pretty bad start and was trying to work my way up... it took me a lap and a half (out of a 3 lap , 24 mile race) to catch up with Nick (he had fallen back some since the start)... i rode behind him for a little bit (i noticed he has good bike handling in the mud)... i passed him on a climb and continued to pick off riders till i was in 4th place by the start of the 3rd lap... that is were i would stay till the end of the race... Cam finished first, Aaron finished close behind him, Chris Beck was in 3rd, Nick pulled off a 6th place finish (great for his first time in the open elite category)... both Cam and Arron were riding very strong... they were both about 5min ahead of me at the finish... Aaron's ride was particularly impressive considering that he rode his road bike 3.5 hours to this race form his parent house... hes getting in a big block of training before he dose the transylvania epic race.

Next weekend i plan to be at French Creek

Greenbrier challenge mountain bike race report 4/29/12

great day... about 70 and sunny... this race was pretty close to me 30-40 min away which is  nice... i was able to get a nap and hot lunch before the race.

about 15-20 starters in the pro field (i didn't count)...i had a sorta good start... i was in 3rd place going into the first corner but i was then promptly passed by the majority of the field as i went up the first climb gasping for air... i was in the rear of the field  till the next bigger and longer climb... for some reason i was stronger there and picked off a lot of people and found myself back in 3rd place behind Chris Beck and Aaron Snyder and that is where i would stay till the end of the race... being alone for the majority of the race had its ups and downs... it was nice to not be stuck behind someone on the technical stuff... i felt like i could really open up and go faster in those sections... but if there was someone else riding with me i could have asked them how many more laps do we have because i lost count (we had 5 laps)...i  thought i needed to do one more... the race officials gave me a blank stare as i went out to do another extra lap...

for future races that are over 3 laps i am trying to come up with a system for counting laps down... something like an abacus that can attach to my handlebars.

teammate Arron Snyder had a great race... he came in 1st
and teammate Jeff Dickey was riding strong only about 30 seconds behind me in 4th place when he had a flat tire... bummer.

MoCo Epic 2012 and new Seneca Bluffs Trail

did some tail work with Jeff Dickey on a new section of trail that will be in the MOCO (modgomery county) epic loop... its a nice section of trail... its not very technical but it has some good scenery of some rock fetchers along a ridge and it gos over a cool waterfall that slowly stair-steps down( it was running pretty slow today)... i forgot to take pics of those sections but i did get some pics of Jeff and others working...

we did a 1:45 ride in schaeffer afterward
